anglisky yazik

i just walked in on oma in the toilet.

it's early in the am and the door wasn't locked. she was sitting in there in the dark and, because the light is inside the room, i didn't know she was there until i reached out to flick the switch and instead touched human skin. i said "sorry" and, despite her lack of english and her garbled deutsch response, i'm quite sure she understood.

perhaps unsurprisingly, i've been thinking a lot lately about language and how one can and inevitably does, whether consciously or not, manipulate language to cater for a wide variety of situations. and how my personality, my identity, is entrenched in my way of speaking and my appearance.

i've copped a bit of flak, here in chaos house, for writing unintelligible emails which i suppose is a fair commment. but in attempting to be widely understood, particularly but those for whom english is not their first language, i can almost feel my personality changing...if i was going to be dramatic, i'd say disintegrating.

the nature of human restlessness

"Pascal, in one of his gloomier pensées, gave it as his opinion that all our miseries stemmed from a single cause: our inability to remain quietly in a room. Why, he asked, must a man with sufficient to live on feel drawn to divert himself on long sea voyages? To dwell in another town? To go off in search of a peppercorn? Or go off to war and break skulls?"
