So why are you going to China? ( 14th Nov, 2006 )
I'm in Ma On Shan. 35 stories up, staying with a friend's mum, who has been here teaching english for the past four years. It's a shoebox apartment, literally - Daphne has a narrow vertical shoe-stacker that fits the in gap between the inner and outer front door, and shoes piling up in the living room. Not much to say, yet, except - I made it. I'm spending tomorrow wandering around HK, then meeting some friends-of-a-friend and catching trains to Chengdu, unless ...
My lover is in Thailand. Alice is on her first stop on a round-the-world ticket that'll take her through Europe, then over to the US for at least a year. Saying goodbye was hard, horribly hard. And now ... I have half-formed crazy plans to bail on South-West China and meet Alice in Vietnam instead - or even get her to come into China, if Visa stuff isn't too crazy.
Hmmm. I have to fly out of Shanghai in five weeks. I have ... some cash, not enough for flights, but definitely for diversions, especially in the name of romance ...
guess I'll keep ya posted.
... plans to travel solo, do the mish on y'own, get some good me-time?
Phishhhhh - it's all about the romance!
The first time i ever left the southern hemisphere and travelled, it was with my partner. We stayed in the dirtiest, shittiest hotels and backpackers Europe had to offer, slept in the rain in forests, ate cold tinned ravioli on a park bench outside Les Deux Magots and at 18, it was the most romantic and exhilarating time imaginable.
The second time was solo. I met infinitely more people, spent hundreds of hours by myself for the first time ever, and still stayed in the dirtiest, shittiest hotels and backpackers Europe had to offer. I also spent most of that time missing the woman I loved like crazy. Sometimes I wish we'd gone together; most of the time I'm glad it was solo.
If China is going to BE the future then isn't it more like going to the past from the future? Which is just like being in the present. Depends on who you're talking to. You're so hot right now.
